CNC Horizontal Milling of a Billet Aluminum Hinge for the Aerospace Industry
An aerospace manufacturer approached Aljo-Gefa Precision Manufacturing LLC. to create a hinge that would be used within the thrust reverser of a jet engine. The customer supplied CAD drawing called out the use of billet aluminum. Fabrication would require precision horizontal milling, including pocketing, profiling, and boring.
Each hinge measured between 3" and 10" in length by 2.5" to 4" wide, with tight tolerances of ±0.002". In addition, the finished product required a hard coating, painting and special packaging.
We were asked to deliver 30 reversal hinges each month, in 15 different sizes, for both left- and right-side engines. The customer required each hinge to be finished in green paint, fully sealed, and packaged. We shipped the first hinges within 10 - 12 weeks of order acceptance.
